IELTS Test – English Proficiency Criteria

Since last few years IELTS (International English Language Testing System) has become acceptable criteria for admission into various universities and colleges. For all international applicants whose native language is not English are required to fulfill English proficiency and this where IELTS plays its role of proving the English proficiency level of a student.

There are two organisation offering the IELTS Test: IDP IELTS Australia & British council IELTS UK. IELTS Test is categorised into four Section – Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. IELTS Test is assessed on the basis of band scored by the candidate. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9). There are two types of IELTS Test – General Test and Academic Test. General test are applicable to apply for Permanent Resident and Work Visa and, on the other hand, Academic Test are acceptable as an admission criteria in university and colleges for postgraduate and undergraduate study.

IELTS Academic module Test Format

Listening Section: Listening Test is 30 minutes long and an additional time of 10 minutes is provided to the candidate for transferring the question to answer sheet. The listening test will contain the four recorded monologues and conversations.

Reading Section: Reading Text involves candidate to read three passages and answer 40 question correctly and, accordingly, the candidate acquires the band.  Reading test last for 6o minutes.

Writing Section: There are two writing test in IELTS – Essay writing & Graph writing. Candidate needs to write one essay of 250 words and analyse and present the graphs in 150 words. Candidate gets 60 minutes to answer the writing test.

Speaking Section: Speaking Test does not held with the above tests. This is taken either 1-2 days before the above test or afterwards. The speaking test is an oral interview of candidate. Examiner asks 11-14 question on some familiar topics such as home, family, work, hobbies, studies, interests and on a task card. Candidate is then assessed on Fluency and coherence, Lexical resource , Grammatical range and accuracy, Pronunciation.

IELTS General module Test Format

Listening Section: Listening test of General IELTS is same as Academic IELTS Test.

Reading Section: Reading Test involves answering three passages, but, thee passages are different from academic test. These are generally short passages,however, tricky to answer them.

Writing Section: Writing Test include Letter writing and Essay writing. Candidate has to write letter of 150 words and for Essay writing the number of words should be 250.

Speaking Section: Speaking Test in General IELTS Test is similar to Academic Ielts Test. It is a face-face interview and includes short question, speaking on a familiar topic as per task card and a structured discussion.

A score is calculated for each test section – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band score is calculated by averaging the individual scores and rounding up the sum. Validity period of IELTS test is 2 year. Candidate will have to sit for test again if the validity of the test expires.
